A man who cannot be named for legal reasons but who is believed to be one of two men currently preparing to assist the courts with the trial and conviction of the killers of soldier Lee Rigby has been involved in an incident in Belmarsh Prison.
It appears that the man was attempting to leave the prison unauthorisedly by eating his way out and had already started biting one of the windows when five prison officers intervened, in an attempt to prevent the man from injuring himself. Their brave, timely and gentle restraint, although not quick enough to prevent the man from losing two of his teeth in his attack on the wndow, fortunately succeeded in preventing him from inflicting further injury on himself.
When asked about the incident a spokesman for the Prison Officers' Union, Scrunite, said "Our members are always being praised for their brave and humane actions in cases like this, but caring for our prisoners and their welfare has always been at the heart of all our actions, and our members recognise that this is all just part of being a caring profession."
The window was later reported as being "not seriously injured, fortunately" and will probably be repaired within the next few days.
