Civil rights campaigners gathered outside a Florida courthouse today to hail a verdict seen as a milestone in American history.
Speaking immediately after a not guilty verdict was handed down in the Zimmerman case, campaigner Louis Leaver said: “For centuries the ability to kill black people with impunity has been the preserve of America’s white population. With this landmark ruling Hispanics have been granted an equal right to face a murder trial and be acquitted by a non-black jury as their white counterparts.”
When asked if black people would ever have the same rights a judge said: “Oh they are able to commit murder the same as anybody else right now. It's just they’ll be executed by lethal injection if they do”.
