Apart from the few solar panels which have burst into flames, made electricty cables melt or caused explosions in local electricity sub-stations, the major effect of a prolonged period of cloudlessness on solar panel installations has been the catastrophic impact on the solvency of the electricty supply companies.
The two biggest suppliers - Yonn, a Shanghai-based energy company, and Henpower, a company owned by a shadowy Irish-Italian syndicate of Hedge Funds based in the Isle of Wight - claim that they had been mis-sold "confusing, misleading and dishonestly-titled" Feed-In Tariffs by solar panel owners and have demanded a government inquiry.
However, one typical 3.6kWp domestic solar-panel owner, from his recently-purchased island in the Seychelles said "Eat my kilowatts, suckers. However, if you are willing to pay me monthly by direct debit, accept paperless invoices, sign up for an un-breakable 25-year contract with a guarantee of no reduction in tariff and increase the payment by RPI + 10% every month, you won't get a discount but it will give me, my accountants, all my family, mistresses, staff, land agents, investment managers and tax consultants a good laugh."
