In a remarkable transformation in front of millions of television viewers this afternoon Andy Murray finally divested himself of all traces of 'Scottishness' and became a true English hero.
It was a close run thing, especially when trailing 4-1 in the second set with Murray looking distinctly Scottish at this point. However he rallied bravely with cries of "Hussah!", "Take that foreigner", and "This one is for Queen Elizabeth" and roared back to take the set 7-5.
Murray had three championship when serving at 5-4 in the third set, only to lose them all as a final wave of tartan was expunged. "Play up! play up! and play the game!" he said to himself under his breath as he thundered down one last serve and the floundering opponent netted.
