Vascular surgeons have become the first of a new group of nine specialities to publish their golfing performance data, to include handicaps, driving distance, putting accuracy and average bar spend.
It will appear in the next edition of the Telegraph's golfing supplement. The other groups will follow in the coming weeks.
But the move has been overshadowed by some surgeons refusing to take part. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt warned that those refusing to reveal their stats would be challenged to a 9-hole tournament at Wentworth. "It will be an MPs v Consultants, losing team to buy dinner arrangement," he explained.
The Health Secretary defended the move, adding, "When you're about to opened up for a heart transplant, which surgeon would you want operating on you - the one who can hole a 10-foot putt or the one who regularly tee-shots into the water? The public has a right to know these things."
