Pub landlord Dave lanchester was struggling to pay the bills - until he started posting pro Al Qaeda messages on his Facebook page. Pretty soon his pub was packed out with spooks every lunch time and business was booming.
Lanchester has discovered a new method of attracting customers that's revolutionising business: spook marketing. Put simply, it involves posting messages that bring snoopers scampering into your premises to get a good look at you. In order to avert suspicion, they're obliged to buy a drink. According to trade magazine The Morning Advertiser, spook marketing could give the licensed trade a shot in the arm - in more ways than one.
"It's been a real learning experience," said Lanchester. "At first I was attracting CIA agents, but they don't really drink much. But someone told me how to post messages that would come to the attention of GCHQ and after that I never looked back. Those MI5 spooks drink like sailors - and they often leave their laptops behind too."
With the cash tills ringing and a clientele of marines and SAS men to keep order in the pub, Lanchester felt as though his fortunes had turned the corner. Last week he even took his first holiday in six years. But something strange happened.
"Wherever I went, there was always a crowd of people following me," said Lanchester.
