The word loyalty used to be synonymous with the game of football. Some of our younger readers may find that hard to believe but the truth is, in the 60s and 70s the only time a player would move teams is if he was offered more money or a greater chance of winning trophies at a bigger club.
Fans should be used to the stars they follow breaking their heart but even the most hardened fans are still shocked when a player asks to leave, Liverpool fan Kennan Thompson said of Luis Suarez, ‘When I read he asked to leave, it hurt. I thought for sure that he would treat differently from all the other clubs he left for more money.’
‘The worse thing Is, that all the crap players are still here, we need to get rid of them. They’re always asking us to be more patient and show a bit of loyalty to the players that are already at the club. It’s naive to expect that though, the club can’t halt their own ambitious out of a archaic view of loyalty.’
