Fears that the Deputy Prime Minister may be out of touch, were raised when Mr. Clegg suspended Nick Hancock from the Liberal Democrat Party. Mr. Clegg seemed unconcerned that Nick Hancock is a chartered surveyor from Ratho and not a Member for Parliament.
Speaking on LBC radio, the Deputy Prime Minister said: "What we have here, is a man deliberately avoiding questions by the Chief Whip by spending 60 days on the remote islet, Rockall. As leader of the party I can admire someone who has had major heart surgery trying to break the 42-day record, but I can not condone living in a 150kg shelter with a Russian spy!"
Liberal Democratic members have recently become agitated that the leadership has distanced itself from the grass roots of the party. "The latest manifesto says 'go back to your constituencies and prepare for government'", said one bewildered Activist. "It also lists a ten point plan for defeating William Pitt the Younger."
The suggestion that Mr. Clegg was slightly confused was rejected by Deputy Leader, Simon Hughes: "We have been monitoring closely complaints against Mr. Hancock. At it's peak 'They Think It's All Over' was funny, but what he did to the 'Room 101' breached our code of conduct. His compilation video of footballing bloopers was a clear example of inappropriate behaviour."
