It was an attempt to bring some cheer to lonely dinner times but for Mavis Bacon her plan backfired. Bosses at the Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) dismissed Mavis after conducting an internal investigation following complaints from customers.
Jim Shard of the WRVS explains "We responded to a number of complaints from elderly customers that they felt someone was watching them during mealtimes. One poor lady was convinced she had seen a vision of her late husband in her cottage pie whilst another was so upset she thought her crispy chicken, potato croquettes and veg dinner was possessed".
Responding to her dismissal Mavis said "I was only trying to cheer the old buggers up. Most of them didn't even appreciate the effort I'd gone to. I would lovingly arrange the sausages, mash and beans into a cheery face and they would just tuck in complaining about lumps in the potatoes".
