Hot on the heels of Angelina Jolie revealing she opted to have preventative surgery to reduce her risk of breast cancer, British treasure and not the star of Harry Potter Emily Watson announced she has taken steps to reduce the chances of a lorry knocking her down.
Speaking in a French publication, Watson detailed her process of walking across a road, ‘The first thing you do is stop at the edge of the foot path, if you find yourself walking head on into traffic you’ve gone too far. At that stage, you look first to the right and then to the left, that’s the rick you see, to look in both directions. Of course, you must also remember to listen, in case of invisible traffic. Using two senses at once can be overwhelming so it’s important for beginners to have a buddy, so you can concentrate on a sense each, a blind person and a deaf person would be ideal.’
Campaigners for road safety hope the choice to bravely declare something that cost her nothing but additional adulation will help young people be safer. ‘This creates media attention for a very important issue,’ said campaigner Jessica Merlin. ‘One might ask, why was this not widely reported anyway, surely we shouldn’t need a celebrity to make people care about a story that could save lives. We could ask that, but I’m the one campaigning for this issue and this kind of proves I’ve fail miserably at my job.’
