Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has narrowly avoided an attempt to make him look like a "doofus" in the eyes of the world.
In the early hours of Saturday morning verbal shots were fired in the capital, Bogotá. The Colombian leader, Alvaro Uribe, labelled Mr Maduro "immature" in series of condescending slurs.
Mr Maduro, only recently elected, is alleged to have "cried like a little girl" just because of an "ickle" right-wing conspiracy to kill him. On Friday, Mr Maduro in a plaintive tone, whined: "Uribe is behind a plot to kill me. Uribe is a killer." Mr Uribe countered by implying ("hijo de puta") that the Venezuelan President's mother exchanged intimate favours for bolívares fuerte.
Historically there are many examples of infamous slap-downs for self-pitying survivors of assassination:
• 1984: The Provisional IRA claimed Margaret Thatcher was a "gobshite" and "as thick as a bull's walt"
• 1944: Claus Von Stauffenberg referred to the German Führer as "Sie dumm fuhrt" (- a stupid head)
• 1605: While Guy Fawkes labelled King James I "an idle-headed, pribbling, malmsey-nosed scut!"
The International community has been strangely silent on this issue, except for Vladimir Putin who referred to Mr Maduro as "big girl's blouse!".
