I've got this little catch phrase running through my head - "I'll 'ave a 'arf" - said by a little, flat capped character called, I think, Jacko, in a TV sitcom many years ago.

What programme was it in? Was it that one about Pledge's pickle factory, with Hylda Baker and Jimmy Jewel? Or am I totally wrong?

Please help - this is driving me crazeeee.

Jacko was in Love Thy Neighbour - that wonderful 70's sitcom about 2 loveable characters called 'Sambo' and 'Snowflake', one of whom turned out to be Patrick Trueman from Eastenders.

That was indeed Nearest and Dearest, although the catchphrase "I'll 'ave a 'arf" wasn't used in that one (I have every episode on DVD). Perhaps it was used in Not on Your Nellie, Hylda's next (an infinitely inferior) sitcom.

Wiki tells me - "Jacko (Keith Marsh) is an elderly white man and socialist who works with Bill and Eddie. His catchphrase is "I'll have half", in reference to a half pint of beer.".

You could plug that oilwell with 'Nearest and Dearest' and still have a bit left over.

Now Bootsie and Snudge - they were in a different class altogether.

It was indeed from Love Thy Neighbour, 'I'll 'ave 'alf" being the scriptwriters idea of a good running gag.

Am I alone in thinking Love Thy Neighbour wasn't actually racist? It certainly treated racial name-calling as something suitable to laugh about in a way that would make any sensible person cringe now, but Jack Smethurst's racist white character was a complete buffoon who was always outsmarted by his much sharper black neighbour. It's heart was in the right place, it's just that it was utterly crap and unfunny.
