UKIP leader Nigel Farage was quick to defend the party's Basildon candidate, Alan Hitler, when pictures of him seemingly giving a nazi salute and invading Poland were published.
'This is absolutely typical of the Conservatives,' he said at a press conference. 'They take perfectly innocent pictures and then read things into them which are not there.
'For instance, they say that when he is standing in front of an enormous crowd with his right arm straight out, he is giving a nazi salute. What nonsense! He is clearly reaching for his smartphone. And when it seems that he is leading a squadron of tanks into Poland, it's obvious that he is - well, need I say more.'
The candidate himself spoke to reporters outside his schloss. Through a German interpreter, he said: 'You swinedog! You cannot stand up to the third empire! You will all be transported to our concentration - what? Oh - er, vote UKIP.'
