"Everybody's got the wrong end of the stick," Work and Pensioners Secretary Ian Duncan Smith told reporters this morning. "On the subject of sticks, for example, if you can afford your own stick and don't need one provided by the Department of, er sticks, then by all means send us the free stick we sent you. Then buy your own.
We want people to stand on their own two feet, but that doesn't mean if they need a stick to do so, that we won't provide one. Provided people don't have the wrong end of the stick about whether they qualify. Just as long as it's clear. In fact instead of sending back the stick, you could refund us the cost of the stick. Then we won't have a lot of sticks in the system. I do hope that clarifies matters."
