NHS hospital patients think nurses are sexier doing paperwork rather than providing direct patient care according to a Royal College of Nursing poll.
The poll of thousands of patients found that watching nurses help resuscitate patients or apply a tourniquet was far less popular than watching a nurse bending over a photocopier.
RCN general secretary Peter Carter said: 'These figures prove that our members are drowning under a mountain of medical tasks when they could be attending to desperate needs on the men's ward.'
'I'd rather watch a nurse in a crisp new uniform sitting around with a clipboard on her knee than doing medical things,' said Arthur Odgers (78) who is recovering from his third heart attack. 'It makes me feel much better watching nurse ticking her boxes, though it probably isn't good for my old ticker.'
'And this bloody bed pan needs emptying again,' Mr Odgers added.
