Officers on the Yewtree investigation are keeping a close watch on those under suspicion lest they use the fuss over the former PM's death to slip unnoticed off the mortal coil themselves.
Detective Inspector Brian Anderson, who is in charge of several celebrity files, said: "We have a number of well-known people in their seventies, eighties and nineties in our sights, and many of them are probably tempted to give up the ghost at this time, hoping the news of their demise will be safely buried. That would be a bad idea - Operation Yewtree never sleeps".
DI Anderson has been taking a particular interest in some frail former TV presenters and rock stars who look rather tired of it all, but he says they only have to look at what happened to Jimmy Savile's posthumous reputation to see how foolish it would be to die now. "It really is better to stay alive and answer the charges - those who are innocent have nothing to fear. In fact, dying at this point could be seen as distinctly suspicious".
