Maybe, but it's costing the taxpayer pro rata more than £26,000 a year (the benefit cap for a couple/family) to keep him in prison. I'd have confiscated his house and car, and sentenced him to 500hrs unpaid community service to be carried out over 8 months. I'd also have made him pay all the costs of the prosecution and banned him from driving for 10 years. That would have been a salutary lesson. Keep prisons for people who are a danger to the public.
Or put him in the stocks and chuck rotten eggs at him.
