A man called emergency services to report that he had cut off his own penis because it was ‘sexist.’
John Thomas, 65, of Cockermouth, Cumbria, was found in a distressed state and bleeding heavily in the garden of his home in a quiet residential area.
‘He had been reading that Germaine Greer,’ said neighbor Mrs Alice Wigthorpe, 75. ‘I think it affected his mind.’
The neighbor had reported seeing ‘inappropriate pruning’ in Mr Thomas’s garden some hours earlier but her concerns were dismissed by authorities as ‘a prank call’.
When an ambulance finally arrived it was discovered that Mr Thomas, former guitarist with 70s rock band Sticky Wicket, had sliced off his own penis with a pair of garden sheers. Beside the amputated organ was a copy of Greer’s feminist bible ‘The Female Eunuch.’ Mr Thomas was taken to A and E but doctors were unable to reattach the severed member.
'We are seeing increasing levels of male self-mutilation,' said reconstructive surgeon Mike Abercrombie. 'It is a worrying trend.'
Clinical psychologist Oliver James said it all formed part of the 'crisis in male identity.'
Despite his trauma Mr Thomas, now convalescing at home, has nothing but praise of Ms Greer.
‘Her book made me realize I was a victim of my own body,’ he said. ‘I had inappropriate thoughts. I was objectifying women even slept with one once. Basically it made me a victim of the patriarchy.’
When contacted at home Ms Greer said she accepted no responsibility for Mr Thomas’ actions. ‘The man's a bleedin nutter,’ she said.
