David Furnish, Elton John’s life partner has spoken out about his battle with Literals Disease. This debilitating illness has robbed Furnish of the ability to perceive metaphor and idiom, leaving him confused and exhausted.
“It all started when Elton asked me not to let the sun go down on him,” Furnish explains in a tearful voice. “I mean, I knew that closing the curtains wasn’t going to work, so I spent hours talking to science-y people about how best to help Elton avoid sundown. Clearly, stopping the world from turning on its axis wasn’t going to be possible, I mean, dur, I’m not stupid.”
“But I couldn’t believe it when he rejected the extensive round-the-world travel itinerary I worked out.”
Elton John was devastated when they got the diagnosis. “For years I just thought David was being an arse, and a sarcastic one at that. He would often stop me to point out that ‘Sorry’ isn’t a particularly hard word. I hate that.”
Odd episodes in their life together now have a rational explanation, such as the time David took Elton to the cockpit of the plane they were in to meet the pilot, and of course David’s tendency to light a candle during windy conditions.
But the pair have learned to live with the disease, says John. “As long as no one tells David to cut the crap, we’ll be OK.”
