The Chancellor of the Exchequer spoke movingly in the Commons today about the sheer volume of helpful advice he received when writing the Budget. “Clearly, the views of constituents are useful, but as much as anything BBC Radio’s ‘Today’ programme helped me finalise my speech.”
Indeed, Mr Osborne said that as late as this morning he had been listening to city financiers, business-people and trade union officials. BBC’s big hitting John Humphrys had invited them to outline what the Chancellor should do in the budget. “Fortunately, I found a pen and paper behind the cornflakes and jotted down their main points. Goodness only knows what mistakes I’d have made this afternoon if I’d been watching re-runs of Top Gear on Dave instead.”
