Paolo Gabriele has been released early from detention and will take up the role of butler to the Pope Emeritus. It was widely reported at the time of his conviction that on his release he would not be re-employed in his old job.
A spokesman from Benedict XVI's office said this was not the same job, as the Holy Father had accepted a new, more vibrant and exciting vocation as a Pilgrim and that Paolo had in no small measure helped him achieve this post.
He added that due to the Pilgrim's failing eyesight, he needed someone to help dress him who could identify the difference between red and brown shoes.
