An FA enquiry into why so many Premier League Clubs have already been knocked out of this year’s ‘FA Cup with Budweiser’ competition has concluded that the King of Cups is not as intoxicating as it once was.
For many years, the FA Cup was hailed as the greatest cup competition in the world, attracting huge excitement, worldwide interest and, more recently, corporate sponsorship. But it appears that Premier League Clubs now consider the ‘FA Cup with Budweiser’ to be so watered down that it has the strength of the old Carling Cup.
With Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs all flatly refusing to field their strongest teams, and falling to lower League opposition as a result, the FA launched an investigation. They were shocked to hear that the prospect of progressing through several rounds of the ‘FA Cup with Budweiser’ doesn’t make these Clubs go gooey-eyed and weak at the knees.
FA spokesman Chris Banks said, “I cannot believe that we have allowed the ‘FA Cup with Budweiser’ to become so diluted. It leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.”
