An armed robber who tried to hold up a liquor store in Pretoria was forced to flee empty handed after store owner Jake Crossier mistook the man for a supermodel.
The licencee said the robber walked into his liquor store around 8.30 on Monday night wearing dark blue slacks, a black hooded sweatshirt, matching ski-mask and was brandishing what appeared to be a 9mm hand-gun.
‘Straight away I thought ...dark slacks, hooded sweatshirt, ski-mask pulled up over his face, handgun....that guy’s a model’ said Crossier ‘so I asked him if we could have a photo taken of the two of us hanging out together.
Nothing intrusive....just a photo and maybe add a few words...’To Jake...best liquor store in town...Respect’...that sort of thing.
I was thinking of hanging it in the bathroom.
But he threatened to blow my face off and shove it up my ass unless I emptied the days takings into his rucksack. I just thought he was being temperamental...you know what these supermodels can be like.
Then I thought maybe it’s not a guy, it’s Naomi Campbell ....so I hit the panic alarm and called the police’.
Mr.Crossier said the man began hurling death threats and trashing the store with a baseball bat before eventually emptying the magazine of his hand-gun into the CCTV camera behind the counter and running off down the street.
‘Police say I had a lucky escape’ said Crossier ‘if it had been Naomi Campbell I’d be a dead man now'.
