In a week when footballer Robbie Rogers ‘came out’ as gay, and retired from the game, Gordon Starkey, secretary of the Association of Gay Footballers, has announced that the society is going into administration. “From the moment we set up the organisation”, said Starkey, “it’s been a total and unmitigated disaster.
“I don’t honestly know what we could have done differently. We halved the annual membership fee and offered to upload members’ photographs and bios - at no cost - to the association’s Facebook page. We even had special offers on show-tunes and soft furnishings. But after all our efforts, we’re still waiting for our first member.
“If you Google ‘cat playing piano’ or ‘skateboarding dog’, you’ll find millions of pages. But Google for ‘gay professional footballers’ and there’s nothing but jokes. Frankly, we’re disappointed”...
