A representative of a company specialising in coach tours across Romania said today that horses were disappearing from across the country and as a result tourism was suffering. “The horses are a popular sight across Romania and our clients are noticing their absence”, said Elena Iacob from the London office of the ‘Book A Rest’ travel agency.
The disappearances coincide with the revelation of food products containing horsemeat appearing in supermarkets in the UK. A government spokesman said today that the concern was that horses were circumventing restrictions that prevented them entering Britain legally. “By gaining access in these ready meals and being present in places like Sainsburys they would be considered as shelf employed and therefore legal under EU law”, said Brian Tewkes from the UK Border Agency.
In an ironic twist, the horses are going to a lot of trouble for nothing Brian explains; “From January 1st 2014 Romanian and Bulgarians will be free to exercise treaty rights, bringing them into line with the rest of the EU and therefore legal to work in the UK anyway”.
In a Gallup poll, it is understood that most horses will opt for sugar lumps or polo mints as their treaty rights.
Fred Wallace from the Jockey Club raised concerns after this information was released, “When the Arabians were first granted the right to work here the estimated numbers were in the hundreds, look what happened, they came in their thousands”, he cried, “It’s very worrying!”.
Under European law, the horses will be eligible to free stabling and foal benefits from the moment they arrive, causing taxpayer advocate groups to add their concerns.
Olivia Stenson of Romanian And Bulgarian Influx Expectation Solutions, an independent organisation which seeks to help with the immigration in January is less worried about the situation, “I don’t know what all the fuss is about”, she said as she tucked into her Findus lasagne.
