A bitter feud between Footballing legends hit the high court today where the family of former Tottenham Hotspurs and England winger Ralph Coates are claiming the rights for the comb over haircut. According to family members Ralph rated his invention of the comb over as his greatest ever achievement even eclipsing his winning the 1972 UEFA cup and the 1973 league cup final where he scored the winning goal against Norwich City. The family claims that throughout his career and even after his death the Charlton brothers Bobby and Jack have taken all the credit for inventing the hairstyle. To Ralph his comb over was not just a haircut it was a way of life and a vital tool in his footballing armory. Just like modern players in the twilight of their playing careers that are said to have an extra yard of pace in their head, Ralph had an extra yard of pace on his head. When running towards an opposition goal with the wind behind him his comb over would rise up like a sale and propel him goal wards with an amazing turn of pace, and if running into the wind his comb over would remain flat giving his head the best possible aerodynamic profile. This was a godsend towards the end of his playing days when many footballers started to experiment with perms, long hair and afros which had very poor aerodynamic qualities.
Barrister David Orpington QC representing the Coats family claimed in court today that Bobby and Jack Charlton had been making a living from the comb over for decades and they should pay millions of pounds of royalty’s to the coates family. After all what else have they ever achieved it’s not as if winning the World Cup in1966 is even in the same league as inventing the comb over.
