Just spied a local parent and his school aged son heading off towards the nearby slope pulling their sledges. Can't see the school through the storm but me guess is it's shut for the day. Where's the bulldog spirit? Hurrumph. Ah, I now also notice that I forgot to leave the cars at the business end of the driveway - so it's shovel time again. Mrs 4fun! Get your wellies on.

On the other hand I had just been wondering how snowed in we might be here, at windy 700 ft above sea level, when the letterbox clanged and today's post arrived.

Right, must press on, these Laptop & GAP insurance websites won't surf themselves.

Walked the 20 mins through the snow to take my daughter in whilst pushing the younger one in her pushchair. i Asked them If they were sure they would be staying open and they assured me they were. Walked 20 mins back. No sooner had my arse touched the comfort of my sofa, the school rang to say they were closing and I had to pick up my daughter ASAP.

I think they could use the extra half day to help organise the long awaited piss up in a brewery.

@Perks: Wonderful!

My first public sector employer amalgamated with others in the same line of work. Without any discernable sense of irony the 'whoopee, we're closing down' party was arranged to be at a former brewery. Given my previous experience of their capability over a couple of decades I didn't risk going and spent a quiet night in.

My son has an A Level maths exam this afternoon and his school closed this morning. Luckily some teachers have stayed on to invigilate.

May I add they did check that I would be picking her up, just in case they needed to call, then when the phone call came apologised for calling me but they couldn't get through to Mrs Perks.

The school playground environment is one of the most sexist I can imagine. I sympathise with my sisters and the fight for equality.

I 'worked from home' today, and definitely didn't 'watch TV' while 'drinking beer in my pants'.

Snow is too important for kids to miss out on. Who needs to learn maths, when they could be sledging?

We got no snow in Cornwall. I am in a massive sulk.

Oh, and school closures due to snow...if they stay open a day or two and half the kids don't turn up, it shafts their Ofsted attendance figures. Therefore- closed unless EVERYONE has a great chance of getting in.

What they never seem to mention is that in areas where house prices are ridiculously high, teachers can't afford to live there, and so have to travel from further afield. The kids can get to school because they're local, but without the teachers, they can't be taught properly.

My son told me that his school was shut yesterday because "It was too Dangerous". Now, I don't want to get all "When I was a lad" about this, but when I was a lad the only kids who got to skip school were the one's the villages that the bus could not get to, and even those often turned up later in the day. The rest of us had to trudge Scott of the Antarctic like a good mile or somethimes more through the snow. After that we would throw snowballs at each other that sometimes contained rock hard ice, or indeed rocks. Once we got there, the hard pressed staff who had made it in were apparently allowed to inflict minor head injuries on us to keep us in line, and we were send outside at break and lunchtime.

A slippery playground is cured by something called "Shovel and salt". It's quite simple, I did it for my elderly neighbour's driveway this week, as did several of the other neighbours, along with a conversation that goes "Do you need anything from the shop?".

In the summer we used real pointy Javelins and did the long jump into a disgusting pit of sand that was basically a home for cat turds. And don't even mention the Rugby games. Very few of us died.

Absolutely. Wouldn't want poor people living locally - it could play havoc with house prices

Cheers Jeni...I hadn't realised it was changed in Sept 2010. Still, my knowledge is still more up to date than my wardrobe.
