There is obviousley lots of good comedy produced by women, here are a couple not yet mentioned in this thread:
Jessica Hynes - Spaced was excellent.
Caroline Aherne - Lots of things.
Miranda is shit. But so are lots of mainstream BBC sitcoms. My Family was shit and that ran for years. Written by men, but it doesn't mean men aren't funny.
On here Darkbill and Long Disctance Clara are consistently good, and i think they're both female? Sugartits will know.
Jeni - button is saying you're not funny. Or not female, I'm not sure which.
Speaking as a bloke, which I feel I’m reasonably well qualified to do, I think there are some funny female comedians and also some shit ones.
I think female comedians are more likely to target their material at other women, which will leave men alienated and resorting to our default response when we don’t understand something – dismissing it as shit.
I saw Donna McPhail in a comedy club once and during her set there were more blokes queuing for the toilets than there were left in the audience. Her material wasn’t aimed at men, so we took the opportunity to have a piss and make sure we didn’t miss something later that we might enjoy after she’d finished.
Other than that I’d say there are probably an equal proportion of good and bad comedians regardless of gender, it’s just that there are more male comedians, so it feels like there are more good ones.
I can name far more male comedians that I don’t like than female ones. But that’s probably because I can name far more male comedians than female ones.
Mr Target is right though, the original sub didn't suggest that women can't be funny, just that Miranda is shit.

Could someone please point me in the direction where I said ‘all women comedians are rubbish’ or alternatively get over yourselves and stop flouncing.
The point was 99% of the male population don’t find the show funny (in the same way they didn’t watch Victoria Wood). It’s very female-specific comedy, which is what I was digging at (ie period jokes etc !).
French & Saunders, Sarah Millican, Jo Brand, Ruby Wax etc are all brilliant. Because they write comedy.. not just comedy for women.
PS Mrs Brown .. now there’s comedy. You see it’s not really a woman it’s a MAN dressed up… as a woman and not being particularly funny.

MADJEZ, you suggest that only women can find mindless slapstick hilarious, and for genetic reasons. So, men are above that sort of thing ? Isn't that derogatory & insulting ?
Personally, and I seem to be in a minority, I think Miranda's sitcom makes a refreshing change. Usually I can't be bothered with sitcoms and I hate slapstick, but I think she makes an old-fashioned style work very well.
And, could one of the female contributors please explain what a period drama is ?

I know. "So-called" comediennes such as Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Sarah Millican, Jo Brand, Ruby Wax, etc - they should be put on a women-only channel, for women.seriously hacked off with this belief that women can't be funny.
PPS Have seen Donna MCPhail do some hilarious stuff in club not just aimed at women.
PPPS (is that enough Ps) French & Saunders are the first to admit a lot of their early stuff was shocking as they were just aiming it at women.
Is everything we write supposed to be serious?

I like Miranda Hart, I think she's funny. And I enjoy watching her show 'Miranda'. There, I've said it.
It might not be a new concept and it might not reinforce any political ideals. It probably won't change the world. But it does make me laugh.
Victoria Wood was very funny in her heyday, and she did a brilliant job of playing Eric Morecambe's mum in that drama about Eric Morecambe and his mum.
There's lots of male comedians who I despise: Patrick Kielty, Marcus Brigstock, Patrick Kielty, Patrick Kielty and that tall nobhead who was all anti-capitalist, liberal and ranty, before he took a job advertising RBS car insurance.
And Ben Elton. He's a cock too.

Racking my brains... Paul Whitehouse? no, he's Aviva, and not tall.
Iggy Pop? Tall, anti-capitalist but not a comedian and Swiftcover.
Alexander Armstrong? Tall, nobhead, ranty, but not particularly liberal, and Direct Line.
Martin Clunes? tall, nobhead, ranty, but Churchill insurance...
(Makes you wonder, doen't it... why do agencies seem to think tall ranty nobhead comedians are the best way to sell car insurance?)
Update:
After a bit of research I discover that both Direct Line and Churchill are part of RBS, so it's a toss up between Clunes and Armstrong... place your bets ladies and gentlemen...

Wayland - He does get a little over excited on Mock the Week, I'm convinced he's taken amphetamines before they start screening.
Good in The Thick of It though, but with writing like that it's difficult not to be.
