I'm going on TV soon. Am on Dave Gorman's show Genius.

Biscuity advice on how to do this and not come across as an utter dingus would be appreciated. Am already the star of a film about working in hospices plus a Japanese documentary about the Footlights, and in both I made an absolute tit of myself.

Wish I wasn't doing it now. Weirdly have had to submit my Genius idea as a written proposal, a concept drawing and a video. Which does take the piss a bit as it's unpaid and all that will serve to help Dave Gorman's script writers come up with stuff for him. I'd back out, but I've told all my mates I'm going to be on the Beeb.

So how do you go on TV and manage to appear like a regular person? Any thoughts?

I'm afraid that I don't have any advice Shitsu, seeing as my only tv appearances have been as an extra on two adverts and a choir member on Songs of Praise.

Let us know when you'll be on though, I always like to put a name to a person making a complete tit of herself on television.

Age 8, thisisall1word was on TV back in the 80s - this show called Child's Play with Michael Aspel (who I never met) - I had to describe Maggie Thatch and God and adults had to guess what I was talking about. No one in my family had a video but a lady up the road took a cutting out of the Radio Times and Mum took a photo of the tele.
If anyone of you newsbiscuiteers used to obsessively tape rubbish TV shows of 1987 and have a clip I would like to hear from you.

My advice is do not keep eating sweets and talking with your mouth full of sweets because it really annoys the people filming you.

I'll ask my chum who won his episode. I'm seeing him tomorrow so will reveal all the trade secrets to you once I've grilled him.

He advocated blowing up bits of the Isle of Wight - not that anyone here would have voted for that!

I was on a similar show in the US called "Idiot". The funny thing is, I am very nervous when speaking to a room (or auditorium) full of people, but am utterly fearless on TV. I know this doesn't help you at all, but was a great chance to write about me.

Aren't you supposed to imagine the person you are talking to is naked or wearing womens underwear or something, so that you don't get nerves in front of the interviewer? You do stand up though don't you Shitsu, so you should be fine.

I had to do a 7.30am radio interview once about ID the card database (something about which I knew close to squat 24hours earlier). Unhelpfully, the organisation I represented told me "we have no policy on that, don't say anything either way" so I had to fill and sound technical for 10 mins, while the cord banged against the phone every time I moved an inch.

    "Don't panic"

Not that I've been on tv. But radio a couple of times.

Try to, if not relax, at least keep calm-ish. Take your time when you speak: your ideas are valuable. Try not to think of how you are performing; think of your ideal listener/viewer, how they're responding and think of your ideas, what you are communicating.

My one and only time on proper radio (as opposed to podcast thingies) was unutterably embarrassing, so I can't offer much advice.
As Quaz says, imagine them all naked, or turn up naked yourself and let them imagine you fully clothed.
What's your genius idea? Mine is to stop writing cobblers on satirical comedy websites.

If Reg Hunter is on as the regular panel member flirt with him.
The list of other panelists isn't inspiring.

Ignore the audience ignore the viewers, treat it like a fun conversation in the pub, be yourself, be funny.

Christ, I hope the regular panel member isn't Reginald D. Hunter as I have the most enormous and pathetic crush on him.

I'm hoping it'll be Jonathan Pryce, he was in the first season, and he's an acting hero of mine.

Any clues to your genius idea? We need to set you a challenge word or phrase to work into your pitch (I'm thinking "Blow George" but need to get the degree of difficulty right)

You'll rock, Shitsu. Do let us know when it's on as let's face it, whatever you say/do can't be more embarrassing than being kicked off Mastermind during the semis... Good luck that lady xx

As someone who broadasts everyday - albeit on radio - I'd say avoid alcohol before you go on - it may appear to relax you but it all too often means it's harder to articulate your thoughts.

Also - try and ignore the cameras and the audience - it's best to think of what you're doing as being a conversation between you, Gorman and his guest.

Finally - don't try to be funnier than the host - it's a guaranteed way of pissing him off and making him go after you.

There's an idea...a NB weekly podcast voiced by Mr Blacker, since you have a face voice for radio ;-)

Go on, post us an MP3 of you reading a FP newsreader stylee, shades of "On The Hour"/ "The day today"

Nice one shitsu - Makes a welcome break from being introduced by that Nick Ross
An ideal opportunity to see how accurate those artist sketches are.

Hasn't happened, and isn't happening. Got sick - horrible manky can't travel across house let alone up to London sick - and so couldn't do it. Sulked terribly for about twelve hours and then got over it.

Course biggest problem now is that none of my friends think it was ever going to happen and that I made the whole thing up for attention. Just because as a stand-up I spend evenings begging complete strangers to love me - really ought to try saying something funny one night too - it doesn't mean I have some sort of inner dislocation that makes me desperate to be talked about. Honest.
