England coach Fabio Capello was amongst a number of high profile sporting figures caught up in a heated exchange during last night's phone-in on Radio Talk Shop.
At times the phone-in descended into a slanging match as pundits voiced their opinions following the announcement of the final squad to represent England during next month's Workers Cup
Capello was particularly scathing over the choice of Derek Gibson as captain
'What's he ever done in a Kwik-Fit shirt?' asked an unusually animated Cappelo
'He did one good tyre change a couple of seasons ago and he's been in the squad ever since.
He's over-rated
Last week I took the Audi in for a tyre check and he was absolutely bloody useless. He was way off the pace and missed an absolute sitter. There was a 6" nail sticking out my rear offside and he missed it by a mile, my gran would have put that one away and she’s ninety two. If you're going to pick him then it's no good putting him on the wing, he does most of his best work in and around the box.
It's all very well kissing the badge but what we need is someone who is not afraid to get some oil in his hair
This manager hasn't got a clue.'
Colin Montgomerie was also critical of the squad after Corgi registered gas fitter Brian Jervis was overlooked in favour of the inexperienced Carl Bryant.
'What more has the boy Jervis got to do to get in the team' Montgomerie asked the panel 'he passed all his City of Guilds, he went to night classes, he's worked in Spain, was always first to put his hand up for overtime. Bryant has only ever worked in metric, we need someone with more experience at this level. He's just a water carrier.
'I totally agree with the last caller Colin' said England selector Geoff Miller from Lords 'if the job's too big for the manager he should stand down and let somebody else take it on before it's too late.
Jervis is a no-brainer'.
It was not until Martin Johnson joined in the debate that sanity was restored. The debate was really hotting up and getting out of hand when one of the callers blurted out 'Johnson, you're just a twat, you know nothing whatsoever about motorway service stations, I bet you use a poncey Little Chef when you're out on the road'
Montgomerie and Miller were quick to distance themselves from the on-air comment and denied they had said anything while Johnson was talking.
'Sounded like there was a bit of an accent in there somewhere' said champion jockey Tony McCoy 'and it certainly wasn't Irish.'
