As authorities in Amsterdam seek to close them down, Local Government Minister Eric Pickles has advised Councils to lease space in local libraries to coffee shops. Pickles says the initiative – dubbed SPLIFF (Smoke Promotes Libraries Insuring Future Funding) by the policy wonks at DCLG - will generate revenue and encourage more readers into libraries.
Responding to the announcement, CILIP, the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, expressed concern at the effect excessive giggling and loud music might have on ordinary library users trying to study, read or find information. But Pickles dismissed their worries.
It’s nowt but blue sky thinking,
he said, munching on his second Mars Bar.
"Use it or lose it. Skin up or shut up.”
Home Office officials have questioned whether the policy is consistent with Government plans to reclassify cannabis but Pickles is unmoved.
This is joined-up thinking”
he said. The Home Office are on board. They’re on the bus. And they’ll be responsible for licensing the dealers… I mean vendors.
