This website is about as stable as a two-legged tripod. It could do with a little light dusting and maybe a redesign too...

Yep. It's always falling over and is looking really dated now; especially compared to slicker opposition like NT. I think time and cost are the main issues to changes being made, however. Everyone who gives time to the running of the site does so for free.

It's only a few years since there was a revamp, but I suppose that time marches quickly in website styles.
I haven't been on much lately, through a combination of being busy, drunk and too tired, but it has been rather likely to keel over if looked at the wrong way.
Qox is quite correct, so the only real option is to introduce a membership fee.

I'd be surprised if there isn't enough collective talent in other ways (other than writing) among the regulars to put together some new designs for the 'brand' (there, I've said it, I've said 'brand'). Having said that the DM is a pretty poor looking site too, and it's pretty much the top UK news satire site in terms of followers. We could definitely do with an overhaul, and a more robust back end (oo-er).
Here are a few that I think cut it in terms of appropriate style (ie pseudo newsy but smart):
Then there are the classic migraine-inducing-'my nephew's got a graphics package'-'make it stop' designs (some great content slaughtered by bad design):
The big advantage of most of the good-looking and well laid out sites is that they make much more of their categories (we only have a left-hand listing), which provides more coverage for more stories: a useful design element when there are a lot of strong stories being submitted at the same time. At the moment, we get one FP, a few NiBs and the tickers. If you're submitting material against a strong field of contenders, it seems that good stuff goes by the wayside for no other reason than space.
Just sayin'
