Rod Stewart's Christmas CD is without doubt the worst I've heard in years from anybody.
If this is what happens when you get old I'll be topping myself in the New Year...

"The Lion's Roar" by First Aid Kit - a bit of a step out of genre for me but currently very, very smitten with this 'un

Hhmmm, its definatley a toss up betwen 'Now thats what I call music 82' and 'Now thats what I call music 83'.
83 has got Gangnam Style....BUT ....82 has got Justin Bieber's Boyfiend.

Button may not be taking this seriously.
Scroat ....once Rod strutted round the stage in leopard skin lycra, begging the question....'Do Ya Think I'm Sexy'...it was all downhill from then on
Saw The Faces on BBC Guitar Heroes recently...no finer R&B band ever. They must have been top-draw live.
Rod's a prostitute
Button...surely it was Ron & Reggie who did it Gangam Style.Posted 5 months ago # -
'Your Friend The Atom' by We Are The Physics - bonkers yet ace.

I've not bought many albums this year, other than a few 'missing' Hawkwind albums. What's good and new? I fancy something a bit proggy and immersive. Is the new "God Speed You! Black Emperor" album any good?

you can try Muse if you want proggy and immersive
Posted 5 months ago # -
I ought to like Muse, but there's something not right about them. Can't put my finger on it. I can't get away from them always sounding 'a bit like Radiohead'. Are Moon Duo any good? I seem to have let current music get away from me this year...must be a 40 thing.

can't be an Urban Guerilla all your life, Smithy...

I like the red one from John Lewis that we put our summer holiday pictures in.

The only albums I bought this year were old ones, and you'll all laugh at me, sneer and point.
So I'm not telling.Posted 5 months ago # -
I'm a rural monkey at best, Ironduke.

My album of the year is now 'Moon Duo - Circles'. It didn't face stiff competition, but it's growing on me quite quickly. It had me at 'psychedelic rock'.

Proggy and immersive? North Atlantic Oscillation's 'Fog Electric' released this year is pretty good (though not as good as their debut 'Grappling Hooks'). Familiar with Cardiacs Wayland? The greatest, most underrated band of all time in my opinion, and possibly right up your ally, though due to illness they haven't released anything in a while.

The Orbserver in the star house by The Orb featuring Lee Scratch Perry.
Definitely not proggy.Posted 4 months ago # -
I haven't bought a single album this year. For the first time since I was 13. I now feel obliged to not buy one just to make it to the end of the year with no purchase. It's people like me that are killing the music industry

Cheers Button, loving the Highwall album. Reminds me of The Aggressive Cottagers. Still looking for the others!

Isn't "Proggoth" one of the Great Old Ones in the Cthullu Mythos?

oh now that was a treat (leather nun)
Posted 4 months ago # -
Never heard of Leather Nun before now, quite like that! The Cardiacs are good too. I found the complete GSY!BE new album on there, think I might buy that next.

Glad you like the Cardiacs tune - seriously, there's several lifetimes worth of wonderment to be found in their back catalogue (only on itunes unfortunately - cds out of print and going for bonkers money on ebay). If you want some mp3s give us a shout, I'm happy to spread the word.

Clockwork Angels by Rush is fantastic. Their best album for a while imo. Proggy and immersive? Yeah, I'd say so, but a big hard rock sound too.
My gift to you all: Big Big Train - English Electric Part I is this year's release, but The Underfall Yard is a delicacy... Some of the best modern proggy music out there for me. Long, developed tracks with orchestral moments, jazzy rhythms and drumming and full vocal harmonies. Some crazy indulgent solos too of course. But nicely interspersed with melodic gems.
