Madge Whiting is proud of her new "Just Google it!" t-shirt in the familiar blue and yellow of the Citizens Advice Bureau. She's one of 21,000 volunteers who give up their free time to offer confidential, impartial, and independent advice and information on a wide range of subjects.
"It was a revelation when I realised we're doing exactly what Google does" Madge explained. "So if we're busy, I pop my head out of my office, give a smile at everyone in the crowded waiting room, and I tell them it would be quicker if they just Google it. The effect is magical. Most of them go away."
This highly effective campaign means the Bureau is now able to operate 24/7. The 'Just Google It!' advice is available for free, over the phone, in leaflets and on the front door when the centres are shut.
But what about those who don't have access to a computer? "PCs are available for use in public libraries," advises Madge.
"And if they don't know where their public library is, well they can just Google it."
