Following on from a series of embarrassing blunders, BBC current affairs programme Newsnight was quick to point out recently-deceased stargazer Patrick Moore (father of actor Roger Moore) “Was not a paedophile as far as we know. He was also not a peeping tom and never stole women’s knickers from clothes lines.”
Welling up with emotion, Queen guitarist and Top Gear presenter Brian May said: “Patrick was a great man. It was he who suggested Freddie change his surname to Mercury and the rest is history. As I got to know him better he turned me on to the mysteries of Uranus. He filled a big black hole in my life and his influence was immense, you could say astronomical. If it hadn’t been for Patrick I would still be dyeing my hair.”
A mover and shaker in the rock and pop world, Moore is also said to be responsible for the names of Keith Moon, Alvin Stardust, William Orbit and Bruno Mars, besides co-founding Sun Records.
