The much followed Windsor / Middleton fixture has finally ended in a 1-0 home victory after what commentators are calling a sloppy goalkeeping error.
After an extended warm-up, the match officially started 18 months ago. The 90 minutes of regular time failed to produce a result despite Windsor’s lone striker William constantly pressurising the centre of Middleton’s defence with over 1,000,000 shots on goal that were expertly parried by Kate. Exhausted by their efforts, the 30 minutes of extra time was uneventful with both sides falling asleep in the middle of the pitch.
While the initial flurry of replays failed to break the deadlock, there were some controversial moments. Just after kick-off in one match, William embarrassed himself with a premature celebration as he ran round the room with his shirt off before realising his shot had trickled well wide. Another match saw an ‘inadvertent’ pitch invasion by Prince Philip, while a further match had to be abandoned as an electrical problem caused the lights to stay on.
As the frequency of the replays died down, public interest waned due to the continuing deadlock and the ‘closed-doors’ nature of the fixture. However interest was reignited as the release of photos of a topless Kate going through her warm-up allowed many fans to imagine being there in person.
The decisive goal came as somewhat of an anti-climax as a shot trickled over the line after an elementary fumble by the keeper. A rueful Kate noted: ‘I’ll have to live with the consequences of this for the rest of my life. I got complacent – I don’t regret resting myself after such a gruelling season but what madness possessed me to put Robert Green in goal?’
