My 'Build your own Tramp' sub has risen, dropped out altogether and is now scaling the heights again. Is there some complicated algorithm wotsit involved?

Perks - I think that's the old algorithm. The new one is just an average (mean) of votes cast, with minimum 5 votes (including ones own) required for eligibility. If equal on points, the newer story is ranked higher, and stories disappear completely after 10 days. That's from 2 years of observation rather than a FAQ page.
Older stories can reappear if someone has a "clear-out". A writer whose piece has been used may prefer to one-star a Top Ten loiterer to make way for fresh material, or someone might decide on behalf of another writer that a story/one-liner has been used, job done, and one-star it, so that other stories may bask in the spotlight that is The Top Ten.
