A 62 year-old man from Scotland, seen proudly wearing the UKs oldest working Poppy at a Remembrance Day Parade in Falkirk earlier today says the little red flower has been in his family for three over generations.
The man said the same Poppy has been handed down from father to son and used by every male member of the family since his great-great-grandfather first came across the Poppy in the lapel of a dead tramp huddled in the doorway of a butcher’s shop back in 1920.
Poppy owner Brody McNail said the flower had been kept in a tin at the back of the cupboard since the very first remembrance day parade in Falkirk over 90 years ago and only ever comes out for a few days on 1st November.
‘I remember being told as a young boy how my great-great-grandfather was forced to break the dead man’s frozen fingers just to get at the poppy. The old tramp was’nae about to give up the poppy without a fight.....even though he’d been dead for three days.
Bargain Hunt’s Tim Wonnacott said he thought the poppy could fetch as much as 20p at auction.
‘Really...as much as that’ sighed Mr.McNail as we shared a half-pint of real ale at his local ‘The Tight Fisted Dobber of Falkirk'... ‘that would buy me a new poppy every year for ....well, for ever quite honestly.
You wouldn’t by chance happen to know if old wooden crutches are worth anything....the old tramp was holding on to them too.
I’m sure the blood will wash off.
Nae, I’m keeping the boots’.

Lovely. Was going to post something like 'Green party calls for re-useable remembrance poppies'but this seems to cover the issue. And more than a tad better
