If you've not noticed they're re-running Cheers on ITV4. And don't forget, it was filmed before a live studio audience. I'm British and I'd like to say a British sitcom was better than this but I can't. Everything pales in comparison to Cheers, nearly always written by one guy per episode, in those days, not by committee. Friends was amusing, Cheers was funny.

Yes... I like the 'ensemble' cast of Cheers. If it was made this side of the pond it would be a desperate collection of unrelated gags, trying too hard to be funny. The best US comedy looks effortless (even though it obviously isn't). I'm a big fan of Seinfeld too: my boxed sets get me through many a winter's evening...

I rather like Frasier, too, though perhaps it's not to everyone's taste.

I really enjoyed Frasier, possibly because I know brothers who are frighteningly like Frasier and Niles.

According to my missus, I am Frasier... and Niles... but not Eddie. Small mercies.

Cheers was great. Just a personal view, but I prefer the older stuff from the States, like Soap, Happy Days, Cosby, and Married With Children. Friends just leaves me cold, although I like the theme tune. My all time favourites are the reruns they had a few years ago of the Beverly Hillbillies, Bilko, and the Addams Family. Sometimes the Simpsons is very good too.

I don't think you should be comparing Cheers with Soap. Cheers, after all was only a very good sitcom. Soap was on a stand alone level on its own. In my best Cliffy voice I'd put it up there with the 70s version of I Claudius for laffs.
Talking about Cliffy, who remembers him being shot while paddling across the Rhine in A Bridge Too Far?Posted 6 months ago # -
Agreed, SOAP was a bit special...it paved the way for all the others.
Still holds up well.
A Brit comedy that doesn't get too many mentions is COUPLING
Yes, I hear what you're saying but I thought it was good.Posted 6 months ago # -
Soap and Taxi for me out of the American ones back then.
Still laugh when I think of the scene where Rev Jim sits his driving test with Bobby helping and he gets the question about what to do when you see a red light ...
