Howard Webb is not ready to stand down as Manchester United’s top referee and is ready to fight for his place he stated in an interview last night “Yeah, obviously Mark Clattenburg has put in a great performance for Fergie yesterday and it’s only right that he gets the plaudits but I’ve seen off these challenges before and I’ll see them off again” Up until recently Webb was the first name on the team sheet after some fervent and committed performances over recent years which he’s been happy to remind people of “I think it’s more than fair to say that nobody has made a greater contribution to Manchester United’s success over the years, I don’t think anyone could have played alongside the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo, Giggs, Cole and Berbatov and linked up in the way that I have but I’ve managed it, its ok Clattenburg having the odd match winning performance, let’s see him do it season after season with no sense of shame whatsoever” Ferguson seemed reluctant to comment last night when asked about the subject and gave non-committal answers “Look. People can argue and suggest ‘who is our number one?’ but what you have to realise is that we are only just into the season, there will be plenty of games to hand to us on a plate and particularly after last year’s cup-free season so it can only be good for Man United to have these two vying for contention, plus, we also have Lee Mason and Mark Halsey coming through the ranks too”.

Like it.
I don't know why Radio 5 always spends so much time previewing the players, when the games are always about the referees

Even I like this and I am a Man U. fan (naturally, living in London).

Consider adding in that Webb may get the coveted Champions League call up for Man United. Or a big money call up for one of the Eastern European, Far east, Indian leagues.

First time I've smiled since the game. Thanks for lifting the gloom.
