England footballer Ledley King has been shunned by other members of Fabio Capello's squad, after hitting every note of the National Anthem correctly.
The defender's blunder happened before the kick-off of the side's World Cup warm-up against Mexico at Wembley.
"I don't know what came into my head." the Tottenham star explained.
"It's true that I was in the choir at school and considered sound in the canticles. But when you start playing international football, the first thing you learn is that you don't sing in tune."
"That's because when you're staning alongside the Human Potato (Wayne Rooney) or David Beckham, the last thing you need is to be heard singing in tune. Part of the footballer's charm is his inability to sing; just look at Terry Venables or Kevin Keegan."
Tonight, England coach Fabio Capello's calling for understanding over King's gaffe.
"He's a sound singer" the coach says "but I'm sure I can convince him to sing out of tune by the time we get to South Africa."
"After all, he'll be leading our fans singing in the opening game against the United States, because let's face it, he's not going to be on the pitch."
