If that were true, that doesn't mean democracy is dead, that IS democracy- a group of people choosing their government.
If you change the composition of the group of people (ie. remove a group with general views in one direction or another) then you will necessarily sway the balance of opinion.
Anyway...if that were true , it would seem a mite incongruous for the Conservatives to be opposing the split, wouldn't it? I'm interested to see how Labour will campaign...they won't want to offend the Scottish by siding up with the Tories, but they'll be desperate not to lose the Scottish constituency MPs.
