Anyone else noticed that the BBC site seem to be looking out their scariest Savile pics for using with the story?
Is there any other kind? The man's reputation has gone, in little more than a week, from tireless charity worker to spawn of satan. Everything to do with JS now has another - more sinister - meaning. It's like Princess Diana... but in reverse...

@ Jen: Re Peel. I think I touched on this in another thread. His 1st wife was 15 when they married. Where he was in America it was legal. He freely talked about having had young girls throw themselves at him when he was in the US. in his words "I didn't check their IDs". I guess the difference is that Peel did not seek out or have a prediliction for underaged girls. He was a niave 20/30 something suddenly finding himself attractive to females for the first time.
A 16 year old sleeping with his 15 year old girlfriend is officially a crime but is very different from a creepy old bastard sticking his hand down a 12 year old's knickers.

What I did wonder about Savile back in the day was how he ever got into the business at all. He was embarrassingly inept as a DJ: he repeatedly failed to get the timing right on intros, either inadvertently talking over them or ending up filling a silence with stupid yodelling, knew virtually nothing about the music so far as anyone can tell and wasn't even entertaining to listen to. Which would seem to add up to the job description.
By all means add a Moyles/whoever else gag here, but Savile's level of awfulness trumped the lot IMHO.

He "got into the business" by inventing it! He was probably the first person to link two record decks together, in the Mecca dance hall in Leeds (I don't think there'll ever be a plaque to celebrate the achievement...). I imagine this gave him an entry to the BBC. I just don't know why they employed him for so long; JS may have been a member of Mensa (something I don't think Mensa will brag about either...), but his DJ 'act' was cretinous and repetitive. Every time I used to hear him on the radio, I'd have to switch channels. JS was a 'powerful' individual, in many different ways. I think people were scared of him... for many different reasons. So, one way or another, he got his own way...
