"Plebgate" chief whip Andrew Mitchell is to avoid this week's Conservative Party conference as he feels his presence would prove a distraction. Other leading Tories who have suddenly found other activities to pursue during the conference include George Osborne, Theresa May, Jeremy Hunt, Justine Greening, Philip Hammond, Andrew Lansley, Grant Shapps, Theresa Villiers, Michael Gove, Eric Pickles, Oliver Letwin and Liam Fox.
