According to Matt Peters, a surgeon at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, the post-Olympic cycling craze is having a beneficial effect on the nation’s health. “It’s great”, he says, “to see so many people cycling to work through the busy streets of our towns and cities. They’re getting much needed exercise, and, let’s face it, a paunchy, middled-aged man dressed head-to-toe in day-glo Lycra is a sight that never fails to raise a smile on the faces of other road-users. Best of all, from a professional point of view, it’s a source of optimism for my patients, as they wait patiently for a new heart or liver or kidney. I’d like to thank Bradley Wiggins and Victoria Pendleton for encouraging cyclists... or ‘organ donors’ as we prefer to call them down in A & E”...
