Recent revelations about Jimmy Savile have brought an angry mob back together, following a summer of sporting triumph and a feelgood factor that, at times, has threatened to go off the chart. Bob Parkin, local co-ordinator (Yorkshire chapter), is relieved. “There’s been a lot to celebrate these past few months: Jessica Ennis, Mo Farrah and that amazing comeback by European team in the Ryder Cup. It was hard to maintain our pre-Olympic levels of righteous indignation while Britain was winning medals. And, let’s face it, those graves won’t desecrate themselves. Pitchforks were rusting away in garden sheds, and, after all the rain, the torches were getting damp and hard to light. We’ve had enough cheering and flag waving to last a lifetime. So it’s good to get back to our core activity: mustering a howling mob in a matter of minutes, to chase a man out of town just because his eyes are too close together”...
