A couple who married on the 21st September are already 'cheesed off' with the disco funk hit September by Earth Wind and Fire - just one week after tying the knot.
"The DJ played it at our wedding disco and suddenly everyone was dancing around singing "Do you re-membah, the twenty-first night of Septembah... and so on and so forth," explained exasperated newlywed Diana Brassington. "We'd never heard it before - the song came out 10 years before I was born. But basically, we cannot stand it. And now it seems that because of the date we picked for our big day, completely by chance, we're stuck with it til death do us part, or for the rest of our lives."
Husband Jack feels the same. "It's a curse, quite frankly. Of course it's catchy - I can't get it out of head if I'm honest. In fact I'm thinking of it now. But had we known of the existence of these suggestive lyrics set to a funk beat with quite a tight horn section and slightly over-produced backing vocals, do you think we'd have pissed away almost five grand on a swank 'do' for all our mates, only to have the DJ come up with smutty crap like that and think he's being smart or something? We took our vows in public but what takes place afterwards on the night of the 21st is a private thing between a man and a woman and not in my book a topic for anyone else to start singing about and jumping around. We feel very embarrassed now about the whole affair."
Things worsened when the wedding video arrived. "To add insult to injury," added Jack, "we've just got the video back from the editors and yes you've guessed it. Off it goes. Do you remem-bah, the twenty-first night of Septem-bah... all over the credits and you can hear it lurking behind the toasting of the bridegrooms which goes on a bit admittedly as there was so many because Diana is from a big family."
"I can't look forward to our first anniversary now, or indeed any anniversary," sobbed Diana. "If we could we'd choose a different date and go back, Jack, and do it again, wouldn't we?"
"If it wasn't for those bastards Steely Dan," added Jack.
