We might need ID to confirm, but my understanding is that the words have precise but different meanings in the clinic:

"acute" is temporal, and the opposite of chronic, eg a sneeze is acute but not usually severe
"severe" is the impact of it, eg cancer is severe but not acute

"acute and severe" would be best avoided.
