A YouGov poll has revealed that most British families keep everything in their fruit bowls apart from fruit. Car keys, bills, things that need repairing, washers and disposable lighters topped the list, with one respondent claiming to keep her Fiat 500 in her fruit bowl. Fresh fruit came bottom of the list, although rotten fruit, bought with the best intentions of being eaten, was in the top ten.
“I’ve now got so much unopened mail in my fruit bowl that I’ve started keeping apples and bananas in the filing cabinet in the study,” said one respondent. Another said: “When we do buy fresh fruit, it briefly provides a worthy and colourful centrepiece among the parts of my dismantled Honda 70 engine.”
