The UK's fish and chip shops are today accused by the EU competition commitee of colluding with American based fast food franchises such as Burger King, MacDonalds and KFC to set the price of chips artifically high.
Chip watchdogs first noticed that the price of fried potato based snacks started to creep up since the late 1980's.
During the era of Chippie dominance (1950-1979) the averag cost of a bag of chips with bits was around 10p - 50p. But since the explosion in American based fast food takeaways and Chinese Chip shops - the price of chips has spiralled whilst the quantity has declined.
